Objectives

Somerset Road Safety Partnership has put together draft road safety learning objectives. These learning objectives are currently being discussed with the Children and Young People’s Directorate and are intended to form the basis for road safety work in Somerset schools.

Reception
At this age children should:

  • Know that they should always hold hands when crossing the road
  • Know that they should always walk with an adult in the street
  • Know how to travel safely as a passenger
  • Understand basic language associated with roads
  • Know that roads are for traffic, pavements are for people
  • Understand the need to stop, look, listen and think before crossing a road

Year 1
At this age children should:

  • Be able to identify safer places to play
  • Know why they should walk, not run, when using roads
  • Know why and where to stop on the pavement
  • Understand the signs of danger – signs and signals
  • Understand the need to ‘be safe and be seen’
  • Increase the understanding of relevant language and concepts. eg left / right, near / far

Year 2
At this age children should:

  • Know how their behaviour as a passenger can affect the safety of others
  • Appreciate the dangers relating to their size and speed in comparison with vehicle speed
  • Understand the effects of being in collision with a vehicle
  • Be able to demonstrate to an adult how they would cross the road
  • Be able to identify safer places to cycle (off road) and the need to use protective clothing.
  • Develop looking and listening skills (identify traffic sounds)

Year 3
At this age children should:

  • Know why and where to stop in relation to specific hazards
  • Identify safer places to play
  • Identify traffic and direction of travel
  • Know and be able to use the Green Cross Code
  • Be able to distinguish between safe and unsafe behaviour

Year 4
At this age children should:

  • Understand the effects of weather and different surfaces on stopping distances
  • Know how to call for help in the event of an accident
  • Be able to plan a route choosing the safest, not necessarily the shortest or quickest, route
  • Be aware of the need to cycle safely and the impact of not doing so on other road users

Year 5
At this age children should:

  • Develop general traffic awareness – recognise signs and signals of other road users
  • Know how safety can be affected by weather and clothing
  • As a pedestrian, be able to plan and make a journey to school
  • Choose safer places to play
  • Identify safer places to cross

Year 6
At this age children should:

  • Know how to use roads safely as passengers, pedestrians or cyclists
  • Understand accident procedures and personal safety
  • Undergo practical cycle training
  • Understand a variety of traffic signals
  • Be aware of the implications of using different forms of transport – eg pollution, accidents and congestion

ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION – SECONDARY & COLLEGES

  • Target Group – Year 7, 8, 9,10 & 11
  • Work with Children & Young People Directorate to develop a programme related to risks and road safety

Years 9 & 10
Risk Taking Behaviour (SMARTRISK)

Year 11 +
Establish some guidance for schools and colleges on students riding and driving to school or college
